Program Overview

HISD-ACP Master Reading Teacher is a one year state approved certification program for teachers seeking reading certification.

The HISD-ACP Master Reading program focuses on the five components of reading, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension; and the Master Reading teacher’s role as a mentor and coach to other teachers in the area of reading. The program curriculum consists of both HISD courses and University of St. Thomas coursework which has been aligned to the Texas reading standards and the competencies for the Master Reading Teacher TExES exam.

Interns will engage in observations, case studies, mentoring and coaching activities, and state exam preparation.


Admission Requirements and Selection Process

In order to be admitted to the program teachers must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Have 3 years teaching experience


Submit a complete application which includes:

  • Copies of PDAS for past three years showing proficient or exceeds in all domains
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with candidate’s experience in teaching reading. One must be from the candidate’s principal or supervisor.
  • All applicants will be required to demonstrate oral skills through a successful interview and written skills through successful response to essay questions

If a teacher already has Reading Specialist certification, he/she may apply, and, if admitted, will do all activities but will not have to take the Master Reading Teacher TExES.


Role of the Master Reading Teacher

The Master Reading Teacher (MRT) teaches reading and mentors other teachers as they meet the diverse reading needs of their students. Mentoring can include working with other reading teachers and/or content area teachers depending upon the needs within the school.
