Purpose

Increase the number of teachers certified in a core subject with an additional certification in special education, English as a second language, or bilingual education teaching in high-need HISD schools

Recruitment

Cohort 2 – 40 interns (2011-2012)

Eligibility

  • Be accepted into the HISD Alternative Certification Program
  • Certification Areas – core subjects (includes generalists, special education, and bilingual)
  • Face-to-face panel interview score ≥ 13 or overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Teacher-of-record in an HISD high-need school

Benefits

  • Partial program fee reimbursement – $3,600
  • Reimbursement of additional UST course – $400
  • Professional development (Neuhaus Education Center, Intercultural Development Research Association, and Critical Friends Groups) – $1,000

Commitments

  • Remain a teacher-of-record in an HISD high-need school for three full school years (internship year + two years after receiving standard certificate)
  • Teach core subjects during three year commitment period
  • Add additional certification in special education, English as a second language, or bilingual during the three year commitment
  • Attend monthly targeted professional development sessions provided by ACP during second and third teaching years
