Progam Overview*
- Two-year program
- Monthly sessions which will concentrate on counseling issues and techniques of counseling
- 12 hours of graduate level coursework at the University of St. Thomas.
- 200 hours of Field-based Practicum
- Portfolio case studies with rubric scoring system at proficient level
- Counseling Summer Institute
- Observations by ACP Supervisor and Guidance and Counseling Department
Admission Requirements
- Hold a valid Texas Teacher’s Certificate
- Hold a Master’s degree
- Have 2 years teaching experience at proficient or exceeds expectation level as documented by PDAS
- Have an overall grade-point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 system
- Demonstrate oral skills through a successful interview
- Demonstrate written skills through successful response to essay questions
- Provide three letters of recommendation, one letter must be from the candidate’s principal or supervisor
- Provide verification of outside work experience in counseling (if any)
- Provide official transcripts (must be in sealed envelope)
- Complete application – incomplete applications will not be considered

FAQ
Do you accept applicants from districts other than HISD?
Yes, we do accept applicants from outside HISD and if you secure a counseling position we will require your district to allow an ACP Supervisor to observe you.
Do I need to be a teacher to apply?
Yes, you must have teaching experience and a Master’s degree. These are state requirements. HISD ACP requires the Texas teaching certification.
If I am an HISD employee do I need transcripts?
Yes, even if you are employed by HISD you must submit official transcripts from all universities attended.
How much do counselors make?
Currently the salary for a counselor in HISD is the same as a classroom teacher.
